Jiři Kylián’s fantasy ballet about a naughty boy is set to an opera by Maurice Ravel, which the composer based on a libretto by Colette.

The performance uses the phonogram from a studio recording of the opera from 1961; National Orchestra of France, choir and soloists of RTF (Radio France).

Angry because he does not want to learn his lessons, the boy destroys his books and vandalises the room he is in. But his surroundings come to life, seeking revenge, and he finds himself in some tricky situations before the restoratio of normality. Lorin Maazel conducts the Orchestre National de Paris and a fine cast of young singers, and the enchanting scenery and costumes are by award-winning designer John MacFarlane.

Jiri Kylian is one of the most important names in the world of dance of the XX-XXI centuries. Philosopher and joker, sage and hooligan, Kilian choreographs dances in his own special style, recognizable from the first cadence. The production is incredibly musical; he not only hears, but sees and feels the music. A master of plotless works, he nevertheless knows how to work with both narrative stories and purely illustrative tasks.
